General FAQs

This is the first time getting professional photos done – how does this work?
We start with a pre-session consultation, typically a week or two prior to the actual session. This allows me to get to know you and your family/partner, and also to find out what your ultimate goals are for the session, so that I can tailor it to be as close to perfect as I can.  During this time we will also talk about clothing, props and the general style of photographs that you love.

What if it looks like it’s scheduled to rain?
We will keep an eye on the weather reports and reschedule if we think we can’t shoot due to the weather.

What equipment do you use?
I shoot with a Nikon D4. My lenses are 70-200mm, 85mm, 24-70mm and a 16-28mm (I don’t use this for portraits).

Why do I need to put down a deposit?
A non-refundable deposit secures your date and pricing. The deposit is transferrable if rescheduled within 2 weeks of the original date. The balance is due on the day of the shoot.

What about black and white photos? I see that you love them.
Yes, I do!!! But not for all photos. There are just some photos that lend themselves to make a beautiful black and white and I may provide them to you just for that reason. If you are asking because you’ve heard some photographers “boost” the number of images by providing half in color and half in B&W, that isn’t me.

Can I see the bloopers or purchase the RAW (unedited) files?
I don’t bother you with the blinks, funny faces and bloopers.  I cull the images so you are presented with the best photos from the session.  The files you are receiving are high resolution, hand edited jpegs.  These files are ready to print (at any size).  Under normal circumstances I do not release the RAW files.

Where should I print my photos?
I’m so glad you asked 🙂  Please do not print at places like Walmart,CVS or Target.  Most of the time your photos will come out looking nothing like they are supposed to.  I’ll provide you with a print release and some lab recommendations so you can purchase photographer quality photos at print labs I’ve used myself.

Can I use one of these photos in an online contest?
No, I’m sorry, you cannot.  The copyright remains with Susan Ramos, LLC which means the client cannot use them to make a profit, submit them into a contest or for publication. Please note that you cannot edit these files in any manner.

There are some props I’d really like to use. Can I bring them?
Sure!! Please fill me in before the session just to make sure we are on the same page.

Can I tell you what shots I really want?
Absolutely! I’d love for you to provide me a list of sorts (maybe a Pinterest board) so I know exactly what you’d like. This way we can ensure you get exactly what you wanted before we start goofing off.

Where are you located?
I’m located in Mercer County, NJ. Specifically in East Windsor which is smack dab in the very middle of New Jersey which allows me quick access to many beautiful locations to shoot your session.

What should we wear?
What I suggest to all my clients is that you look at the photos that you are drawn to and see how much you love the photo because of the clothing. Think about the backdrop of where the session will be. If it’s fall and we will be in the woods around the red, yellow and orange colors think about what will look best against those colors. You don’t want to wear colors that will make you blend in with the scenery.
Here are some basic tips that I tell everyone:
Consider wearing clothing that will stand the test of time so nothing with logos or the latest fad. Nothing loud and obnoxious because it’s distracting to the viewer. Simple is really the best. Don’t dress everyone in the same color or the same clothing. A mix of textures and complementary colors are perfect. Accessories are the perfect choice to add some color pops and texture. Scarves, jewelry, etc.

Whatever you do – please make sure you dress for the weather! It makes for a miserable shoot when you guys are freezing or sweating.

What happens if I lose my images?
Please make copies of the files and store them in diverse places as I only keep images for a short time. If you lose them but I still have them, I’m happy to provide another copy to you!

What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept credit cards, cash, checks or money orders.  Please make these payable to Susan Ramos, LLC.  I accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover and AMEX.  You can also pay with PayPal by gifting the money to susan@susanramos.com.

Do you have a referral program?
YES!  I’d be honored for you to talk about me to your friends, family and coworkers (and anyone else I missed)!  I’d love to thank you by providing you a $50 credit towards a session or I can send you a gift card.  Your choice.
